What exactly are cat vaccinations?

Cat vaccinations are basically yearly or a vaccination that's given every couple of years to help protect your cat from viruses and bacteria in the environment.

Dr. Stacey Huber

Are cat vaccinations necessary?

I would say yes. I think cat vaccines are very important to keep your cat well protected from certain types of viruses in the environment.

What cat vaccinations are typically recommended, and what are they for?

There is an FVRCP, which is a combination vaccine. Usually, that is a combination of calicivirus, panleukopenia, and also feline viral rhinotracheitis virus, which is the herpes virus. And then rabies, and we also have the feline leukemia virus.

What is the vaccination schedule for kittens, adult cats, and senior cats?

For kittens, when they come in, we usually test them for feline leukemia and feline AIDS, and then we'll vaccinate them accordingly, usually around the age of eight or nine weeks of age, up until the age of 16 weeks, and that's usually about three to four weeks apart. Adult cats are usually vaccinated yearly. They come in for an annual exam, get a yearly rabies vaccination, and typically their vaccines are every two to three years, depending on which vaccines they get. For senior cats, we examine them, do some routine blood work, and check to ensure they're healthy enough. They usually still receive a yearly rabies vaccination, and depending on their health and any underlying medical problems, we'll make a decision based on that.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with cat vaccinations?

As with any vaccine, there's a potential for risks involved, but it's important for the doctor to discuss that with each individual client and make informed decisions regarding the patient.

If my cat is going to be strictly living indoors, do they still need to be vaccinated?

Yes, it is very important. It is a legal situation in the state of Colorado, as well as all the states in the United States, that every animal should technically be vaccinated for rabies. That is a state requirement. We recommend it's done either every year, usually in kitty cats, along with other recommended vaccinations.

Why is it important to avoid missing cat vaccinations?

If a cat escapes, gets outside, or encounters anything that might expose them, missing a vaccination could lower their immunity, making them susceptible to those viruses.
