Are dogs capable of change if they have behavioral problems?
Yes, for sure. Sometimes, you can counter-condition them to unlearn a behavior or get to the root of that behavior.

When should you start obedience training?
I recommend starting obedience training very early because it builds confidence in a dog, and a confident dog has fewer destructive behaviors like barking at the mailman. Don't panic if you didn't get your dog at eight weeks old; start as soon as you can because, just like with children, they're very moldable when they're young.
What are the most common behavioral problems and how can they be addressed?
The biggest issue I see is separation anxiety, which is a big one that we tend to see in the hospital. The easiest way these can be addressed is by working with a behavioral trainer as well as your veterinarian. Specifically, with separation anxiety, I can prescribe medications to help ease the transition as you work with a trainer.
Can behavioral issues in my dog indicate that they are sick?
Yes, that is a really good point. If your dog is normally very rambunctious but is off hiding in the corner and shaking, it could indicate a medical problem. I've seen dogs who have bitten their owners because of back pain and things like that. Definitely, their behavior can tell you a lot.
How can a veterinarian help address my dog's behavioral problems?
It starts with doing a thorough physical exam along with blood work to ensure they are systemically well and healthy. Then, have a long discussion with the owner about their goals, whether it's to fix the issue permanently or just to help temporarily, especially if you've rescued a dog. Ultimately, it's about a thorough discussion and a good physical exam.
What other dog behavior management options are available?
There are many options, such as calming chews and lick mats, which can help with behavior. We also like to utilize behaviorists and reputable trainers with multiple certifications, as they can be very beneficial for your dog.
